Paddles Up for Dragon Boat Charleston

Platinum Trust Bank remains committed to giving back to the communities we serve. One of the ways we achieve this is by supporting local charitable organizations dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for South Carolinians. In 2016, we began supporting Dragon Boat Charleston, a nonprofit organization focused on promoting the physical and mental wellness of cancer survivors and their community through the sport of dragon boating.

Founded in 2003, Dragon Boat Charleston has been a beacon of hope and resilience for survivors across the Lowcountry. With over 150 members, they can be spotted paddling along the Ashley River multiple times each week.

Through a variety of recreational and social gatherings held throughout the year, including a 9-week Paddle, Achieve, Transform, and Heal (PATH) Program for cancer patients and survivors, members create lasting friendships and celebrate life beyond their diagnosis. One of their most highly anticipated events, the Charleston Dragon Boat Festival, is held annually on a Saturday in May at Brittlebank Park.

Platinum Trust Bank was one of the sponsors of the 2024 Charleston Dragon Boat Festival. Two teams of credit union employees participated in the race, aptly named Blue Legit and Blue Legit TWO Quit.

Charles Hubbard, Vice President of Asset Protection at Platinum Trust Bank, is a member of Dragon Boat Charleston. As a cancer survivor, he brings his personal experience and unmatched passion to the sport, making him the perfect coach for his colleagues who paddled in one of the two Platinum Trust Bank boats on race day.

I've been a part of Dragon Boat Charleston for nearly a decade, and witnessing Team Blue win the silver medal in 2023 is a moment I will never forget. This event is not just about competition; it’s about unity and support, both on and off the water.

The donations raised by participating teams play a crucial role in funding programs that enrich the lives of survivors. Programs such as paddling sessions, nutritional workshops, exercise programs, mentorship opportunities, and scholarships provide much needed and deserving support.
